Building an In-House Image Optimizer for WooCommerce Work
A free, no-account WebP image optimizer built to solve a problem we kept hitting on our own client work -- WooCommerce stores need product images in specific sizes and formats, and every existing tool wanted an account, an upload to a third party, or didn't know WooCommerce's presets in the first place.
What They Were Up Against
Every WooCommerce storefront project we touched hit the same wall: product photos arrived oversized, inconsistent, and in the wrong format, and WooCommerce expects specific dimensions for thumbnails, gallery images, hero banners, and catalog grids. Manually resizing and converting each batch in Photoshop was slow and repetitive, and the online tools that existed either required a paid account, uploaded client images to a third-party server we didn't control, or produced a single generic size instead of the exact variants a WooCommerce theme actually needs.
How We Built It
We built Optima -- a focused Next.js tool with server-side conversion via Sharp, four WooCommerce-specific dimension presets (thumbnail, gallery, hero, catalog), a visual crop tool for precise framing, batch upload for up to 20 images at once, and a single ZIP export. Images are processed in memory and discarded immediately after conversion -- nothing is written to disk, and no account or signup is required. We use it ourselves on every WooCommerce engagement now, and made it public at optima.appluto.com for anyone else running into the same problem.
